Google Drive - First Impressions

Google has released Google Drive. This is the cloud storage system managed by the giant web. An evolution of Google Docs, so to speak, with all of your important files saved in a folder that is there in the company's servers - wherever they are.

Perhaps Google Drive is not released into your Google account. Maybe you're at work and not have to install the application (for Windows, Mac or Android). Maybe you just want to even read without permeate your PC with Google things that take you privacy. For all these cases and most others I could not imagine, here are the first impressions of the Drive.

Installation
This test was done with Google Drive the application to sync in Windows 7. To download the installer check this page. Of course the Google Drive have to be active in your Google account.

The installer is those who need to download a series of components before actually putting the software to run on your machine. Then, the Explorer restarts (quiet, you will not miss any work in progress!) Already with the Google icon Drive active in the system tray.

Installing the Google Drive
Add your username and password. The Google Drive will ask if you want to change the job folder on your machine or you want to select which folders in Google Docs currently synchronized. By default it syncs everything, to the delight of one who likes to simplify things. Consider that the Docs previously offered only 1 GB and you realize that no matter how many files you have there, the Drive will fit all - unless your HD is less than that.

The Google Drive application automatically creates a new entry in the Windows Explorer Favorites. Excellent, so that the user has access to the fastest synchronization capabilities in the cloud. Microsoft did the same with the application SkyDrive, available for download on Monday (23/4).

Operation

Folder synchronizes with Google's cloud
The Google Drive folder on the computer replicates exactly what already existed in Google Docs (this is the default option). Drag a file to the causes, automatically, it appears in the web interface for the service. The reverse is true when you send a file via the Google Site Drive - moments after it appears on the computer, depending on size.

I have no doubt that the arrival of the Drive will bring more visibility to productivity tools from Google, called Google Docs. All documents created with technology googliana open directly into the browser, as if they were shortcuts to what's on the internet. I disabled the wireless connection from my machine to check and, indeed, so has no way to edit the documents. However, Google offers an extension that enables offline editing.

Anyway, answering some readers ecosystem Office fans: there's no way to open a Google Docs document, be it text, spreadsheet or presentation in MS applications installed on your computer. The contents of these documents is even downloaded to the PC - the link to the internet is the most important. Can you think of retirement as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

It also has no way to edit Microsoft Office documents from Docs. Remains as it was before: the Google cloud system handles these files as if they were attached. You can view, but editing is available only after the files are converted to Google Docs.

Details: The file is being edited with "~" in front there at the Google Drive. Default behavior, considering that runs on Windows and in the windows system is so.

Word document in Google Drive
At least the synchronization is fast. Being open with this same text in Word and have shared with our editor Lucas Braga, the new version appeared in the browser seconds after I press the button to save the document. Just do not have to constantly update the web interface, which means that the person accompanying the edition can not know what has changed. Also can not make changes to the document.

Docs files shared with you (or you) also appear in the folder of Google Drive. Again, we're talking about a simple shortcut for productivity services from Google on the web. Must continue to use the browser to move these documents. All the better if Chrome is also produced by the giant web.

Conclusion
The operation of the new application is very similar to what we are accustomed to do with Dropbox and SugarSync. Was repeated yesterday by Microsoft with the release of SkyDrive app for Windows, Mac and iPhone. Simplifying to the extreme, involves creating a folder on the computer that is synchronized with the cloud.

As competitors, the application of the Google Drive: allows you to choose which folder will be synchronized; displays the synchronization status in the system tray, start with Windows (you can disable it).

Unlike competitors, Google Drive: Do not create a link to download each file (function that Dropbox released yesterday), do not edit documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the cloud (as SkyDrive), does not synchronize folders in different directories, as SugarSync, has integration with Gmail to download attachments directly to Google's cloud.
