YouTube announced on its official blog that it will automatically convert videos to 3D. Since September 2011 it was possible to watch videos in three dimensions, but the feature was in beta and it was necessary to request the conversion manually. Now the process is automatic and will brighten users who like to feel objects out of the screen - if they have a 3D glasses, of course.
The novelty is available to all users and applies only to videos with 1080p resolution. If YouTube's servers already have the video converted, a 3D button appears on the side of the selector video quality. Simply click, put his magical glasses and watch the video.
Developers will also explain how the conversion works. The algorithms combine some of the service characteristics of the video, such as color, movement and space of each frame, then combine that data with some of the YouTube videos that are really in for a good 3D effect.
Reading it seems to easy, but also the complexity of the algorithm, the processing used is enormous, especially considering that YouTube receives 60 hours of video every minute. Fortunately, the money power of Google and scalability of cloud computing easier (and much) the task.
