FBI probes attack on free e-mail service of Google Gmail

The FBI, U.S. federal police opened an investigation into the attack against Google's several e-mail accounts allegedly held by  Chinese hackers, confirmed on Thursday (2) Jay Carney, a spokesman for the White House.

Carney denied that e-mail accounts of government officials from the United States have been hacked. "We have no reason to believe that e-mails from U.S. officials have been violated." Carney, however, avoided answering questions about China's involvement in the attack.

The spokesman also pointed out that the American president, Barack Obama, is "aware of the complaint from Google" and receiving "regular updates" on the issue. "Threats to information and communication infrastructures are a serious economic and security challenge for the U.S. and its allies. So the president has made security one of its key digital priorities," he added.

U.S. officials said government officials were instructed not to use private accounts to discuss confidential matters. However, the U.S. government confirmed that private accounts will check if the authorities were hit.
The statements were released Carney shortly after Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, describing the accusations Google to China as very serious. "We hope the Chinese government give an explanation," Clinton said in a statement.

Google unveiled on Wednesday (1) that unknown hackers, apparently coming from central China, tried to break into the accounts of hundreds of users of its system of e-mails, including top officials of the U.S. government, and Chinese activists journalists.

In Beijing, Hong Lei, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, denied that, calling them unfounded and unacceptable. "The attacks are an international problem which China is also a victim. Accusations of alleged attacks are totally groundless and has ulterior motives," stated Hong.

Google incorporates three features to Gmail Labs

Although few users know, Google takes into consideration all the suggestions of features that users do on Gmail. When there is a big appeal for a particular functionality, it is usually added to Gmail Labs, the "test center" of the new features of the e-mail. Once added to GLabs, features are being tracked by Google. The more used, the higher the likelihood of them being incorporated by Gmail. And that's what happened to three of the features tested in service.

The first, and perhaps the funniest (but no less important), was the promotion of "Super Star". Widely used by most users, the stars are for Gmail that people mark their messages in different ways, indicating the level of importance that each one has. Now, users now have 12 different images, but can choose to display only one or four images. To use them, simply click on the white star just before the start of the subject. The order of appearance of stars can be defined by the user dragging the images into the order you prefer.

The second feature that was incorporated by Gmail is that of nested bookmarks. Added GLabs in April last year, the hierarchical system of markers came with the intention of making life easier for those who are accustomed to the system folders (present in all email clients) and that, when faced with system markers Gmail, just getting a bit lost.
The process, which initially was complicated, was redesigned by Google before being finalized. Now, clicking the box on the right side of a marker and choosing "Add sub-bullets", a screen is loaded to the user, where it will set the new bookmark name and select the new label which will be subordinate. The process is identical to the creation of new markers within the Gmail settings.

The third feature was the built-in Gmail that allows advanced configuration of the IMAP protocol. With this news, users will have a greater choice on the operation of IMAP, and can ensure greater security of their accounts. Among the options the new functionality, which stands out most is that which allows the users to define the number of messages to an IMAP folder can have. Furthermore, access to the Bookmark Manager, the user shall have the option to define which markers will be uploaded by the client e-mail.

Gmail: the e-mail with more than 5 stars

Enough of just relying on the yellow stars to mark important e-mails in Gmail. Starting today, Google has released several new markers with colors and different shapes, which may be used for various purposes. You know those flags that designate a greater or lesser importance of messages in Outlook? Gmail gets something similar.

Not that this feature did not exist before, but it was accessible only through Gmail Labs, the central feature in Gmail test. With the adoption of the stars across the platform and Google email, just go to the settings of your account to enable the functionality.


Gmail: visual markers in various colors and models
All Gmail accounts are available only a yellow star to mark important messages. With this news, the user may choose to use 4 star or all stars of the feature. The stars are available in colors: blue, orange, red, pink and green, and yellow.

I enabled 4 stars because I think it will be more than enough for me. So I can mark messages that were read but deserve continuous monitoring with a signal check, for example. The markers then appear as definite order in their own settings in Gmail.
