Review: Nintendo 3DS, the portable Nintendo 3D

The Nintendo 3DS is the latest foray into the Japanese giant in the world of laptops. The DS family has become quite extensive, with many offshoots, but none with the appeal of 3DS. After film in three dimensions and notebooks with the same technology, and its time playing video games also with the right sense of depth in the images.

Design
The footprint of the Nintendo 3DS is very similar to the traditional DS. Also, both laptops have very similar dimensions. The construction of them is equal, which gives the impression that nothing has changed. Not so, as plainly evidenced by the owners of the Nintendo DS grandpa.

Nintendo 3DS: Controls
The upper 3DS has only the main display, with two audio outputs, each positioned on one side. At the top center to have one of two cameras, and this serves to make pictures. Right, now on the side, a slider lets you adjust the depth of the 3D (I return to it shortly).

Below are the real drivers of the games. In addition to the touchscreen display, which is slightly smaller than that presented in the upper half, we have the D-pad and multi-directional control on the left, while the buttons X, Y, A and B are on the right. Below the display are still buttons Select, and Home Start (not to mention Power, which is next to them, but just below the display).

My experience with the controls of the Nintendo 3DS was very positive. The console is quite firmly in the hands, which is critical in vulnerable environments such as in the subway or in the classroom. However, I must make one exception: my hands are not huge, which possibly explains the ease of use 3DS. We had people in our newsroom who had trouble pressing the buttons or even find a nice position to hold the Nintendo 3DS. This will vary from person to person.

3D Display
Because the design is very similar to its predecessor, it remains to comment on the performance of the 3D display. Above all, the most important is to realize that Nintendo 3DS requires no special glasses to be used. This technology also will undergo improvements, but it is reasonable to say that Nintendo has used its best efforts to deliver what is most advanced in terms of playing in 3D.

The result is positive, but with reservations on several points. We can say that it works very well in its primary purpose, which is to give depth to the games, provided that: the island is not very close to the face, the depth adjustments are in line with what the user needs, the position of the console is correct.

In fact, starting to play is usually a problem in Nintendo 3DS. At least the first few times you get the console and connects with the screen turned to 3D, the impression one gets cards refers to those games in which to lean to one side the number one image appears and leans to the other appears another image. The Nintendo 3DS depends on a very specific position in front of the face to be operated, which usually take some time before people get used to.

Nintendo 3DS: slider controls the intensity of depth in 3D images
The slider on the side of the device allows you to define the depth of 3D objects. Overall, my experience was more enjoyable with the button in an intermediate position. There'll definitely be the player with the depth adjusted to the maximum possible, while we will have simply disabling the 3D (yes, that's possible). Each player has his own preference, which should be respected.

Once you've come to play on Nintendo 3DS, 3D technology is not lacking. In addition, the display is very bright and has vibrant colors, something essential to the gaming experience becomes even more complete.

Although you can disable the 3D, I do not recommend users to play that way. That turns out to highlight the half-assed graphics of the Nintendo DS (which are anyway and end point, there is no way for Nintendo to change this situation).

Gameplay

Portable accepts games from previous generations of Nintendo DS
There are no great mysteries in the way of playing the Nintendo 3DS. Except for new display, everything else looks like the Nintendo DS before. That's good, because Nintendo bets on winning strategy, but can also be bad if the user is looking for something really innovative and unique. Not the case.

Nintendo lent a test unit of 3DS accompanied by three titles: Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings and Steeldiver Resort. None of these games have a really dynamic complex, difficult to assess what I do on the Nintendo 3DS. For now, I'd say all the games I tested guarantee fun for a few minutes, being matters of pure boredom after a while.

A remarkable thing is eye strain after the first minute of play. About 30 minutes after turning on the Nintendo 3DS, you begin to feel that the eyes are more tired. Here in the newsroom we had from lightheadedness to fatigue yourself, what is not good. Some of these symptoms lasted more than 12 hours, inclusive.

The recommendation is that Nintendo gamers to stop playing every hour for a break of at least 10 minutes. Not quite there: after spending an hour playing with 3D maximum, it is highly likely that you avoid facing the Nintendo 3DS for several hours.

Cards come with augmented reality Nintendo 3DS
Augmented Reality

With a camera that captures images in three dimensions, Nintendo 3DS also takes advantage of augmented reality. The basic kit comes with the device small yellow cards with images of characters from the Big N - the link is there, and Mario, among others. After starting the application of RA and pointing the camera at the cards, do they automatically pop up the traditional characters on the screen of the device.

The user can move the camera very well and the cards, as if the characters were really there. Since observing the approach of at least 30 cm (if I remember) card, the sky is the limit for this type of interaction.

But the reality of increased 3DS happens in its entirety with a specific application that brings simple games to the table of your living room or even the couch. For example, fishery, like those of the feast of St. John, using the laptop as fishing rod and the floor of the room as the lake where the fish are waiting to bait appear.

This is, without doubt, one of the coolest features of the Nintendo 3DS. Augmented reality shows to its fullest potential, thanks to software and hardware designed for this purpose.

Pass Street
Knowing that Nintendo 3DS is a notebook that should be loaded into every corner along with its owner, the Big N has included the use of Street Pass. Basically, it allows the detection of other owners who approach 3DS laptop when the person is on the street, for example, going to work. The device automatically downloads the avatar of another person as well as a pre-configured. This information is displayed graphically in the Mii plaza, the central buddy Nintendo 3DS.

The bad news is that Nintendo had sold only one unit of 3DS for us to test. This means that there was no way to experience the possibilities of the Mii ally Pass Street Plaza, which includes online gaming, according to promotional material for the product.

Compatibility with older games
The list of games available specifically is still not very large, although the listing of Gamespot provides several releases by the end of this year. In the absence of titles, the player has those games available for Nintendo 3DS also the latest generation of laptop. Clearly, the images in three dimensions are not present in the gameplay, but still on. Further those who already have a DS and traditional thinking of bringing home the 3DS but are afraid to send their titles without a 3D way road to obsolescence.

Strengths

3D provides more immersing the gamer in the game.
Street Pass: Connect easily with friends and strangers who have a Nintendo 3DS.
Augmented reality very well explored.
Games too simple, ideal for those wishing to spend time with a fun lighter.

Bad points
Display of 3D games is not recommended for children under 7 years.
Quality of photos taken with the integrated camera is pretty poor.
Games too simple as to frighten those who prefer a complex gameplay.
Completing

Note that, in deciding the strengths and weaknesses of Nintendo 3DS, quoted in both the simple games. The notebook is an excellent requested, but should not be seen by any gamer. Its target audience seems to be restricted to those who like a good hobby (now with 3D feature) that can be enjoyed together in a network of friends. If you're looking for that, do not hesitate to take a 3DS home (when sold in Brazil). However, if your desire is to spend hours playing level after level, it might be better off on a PSP, whose titles are notably more complex gameplay.

Nintendo 3DS: three dimensional display can cause headache
Before concluding this paper, I should note that we have not had the opportunity to test the battery from Nintendo 3DS given the short time we stayed with the unit. However, the feeling I had is that autonomy is rather low, especially when displaying 3D graphics is enabled.

In addition to the photo gallery above, published a unique gallery with pictures of the unboxing Nintendo 3DS. Accesses there, it costs nothing to take for now enjoy our Facebook page. Finally, I thank the reader Blassioli Lucas for coming to the writing and collaborated with the tests 3DS!
