Ubuntu 11.10 barely reached the Beta, and Canonical is now with the launch plan in hand for version 4.12. Then write down the dates on the calendar, this version promises!
Even without yet having a defined alias, Ubuntu 4.12 is a LTS version of Ubuntu (Long Term Support, or Support long period). Precisely for this reason, Canonical will endeavor to release a version as stable as possible, and ensure that he receives updates for at least two years (which is great for business plan updates, say by the way).
For version 4.12, the development team decided to change a little the way the alpha and beta versions are released, we will have two alphas, two betas and a release candidate since very close to the official release date. Note the dates:
December 1, 2011: Alpha 1;
February 2, 2012: Alpha 2;
March 2, 2012: Beta 1;
March 22, 2012: Beta 2;
April 19, 2012: Release Candidate;
April 26, 2012: final version of Ubuntu 4.12 (if no critical bug is found in the last minute).
Because this is a LTS release, Ubuntu 4.12 will still have at least three maintenance releases after its release. The first is due out in August 16, 2012, the second on February 7, 2013, and a third release, due out sometime in the middle of 2013.
This, of course, if the world does not end at the end of 2012 ...
