By serving millions of pages every day to millions of Internet users around the world, Wikipedia's servers have to be stocky. They need a server farm to handle all accesses. But as the non-stop growth to happen year after year, the site had to move recently, replacing old servers with new ones. And how good nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation is that they decided to donate them.
This is one of the servers, named by them sdtpa.
The settings are not exactly top line, as these servers have a little over 3 years now. But what matters is that they are in good condition and work, despite having the warranty expired. Most of them have a 2.5 GHz dual core, between 3 and 32 GB of RAM and hard drives with storage capacity ranging between 80 and 320 GB.
To be eligible to receive one of Wikipedia's servers you must be a U.S. resident, representing a nonprofit organization and send an email to servers@wikimedia.org explaining the details of it, as its mission and goals. If the application is approved, they send the server and not the freight charge.
According to a notice of Rob Halsell, operations manager for the Wikimedia Foundation and is managing the donations, 36 requests have been made so far, but there are still some servers.
