A record made by Google in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (Office of Patents and Trademarks in the United States in a free translation) shows that the company acquired the rights to the name Photovine.
The process took place last June 7 and was not revealed how much the company paid to the former owner of the domain, identified as Matthew Gibson.
The registration gives the company the right to use the mark on a program directed towards the "transmission of visual images and information via telecommunications networks, wireless signals, Internet, information services and data networks."
There is still no concrete information on the company will use the new acquisition, but it seems that Google is working on an application for sharing photos with a focus on cloud.
The aspect that raises doubts about the new service is how it will interact with Picasa, acquired by Google in 2004. It is unclear whether the company intends to use as a complementary tool Photovine or if the novelty will have a greater focus on social networks or use a different way to the cloud.
