Adobe scraps AIR for Linux

Adobe AIR development platform for Internet applications that Adobe created and that a solution would be to launch applications on multiple platforms, proved to be an insignificant result on Linux. 10 to 15% share of the expected Adobe, the Linux version currently has a mere 0.5% of total downloads. Because of this lack of demand, Adobe announced yesterday that it is terminating the AIR development for the system.

But softly, that the programs will not fail simply because of it. Currently, the latest version of AIR for Linux is available to 2.6 (on Windows, it is the 2.7, released this week). If the application does not require developed a version higher than 2.6, it will run normally without any problems. Thus, the possibility still exists to continue using the same number of programs in Linux.

But for those new programs, or have been updated and now requires a later version of AIR? To do this, Adobe is launching what it called "AIR for Linux porting kit" for partners and developers registered in the program Open Screen Project to carry and customize even newer versions of AIR. Still not clear how exactly this will work, but I think we may see different versions of AIR running around, or versions that run on Ubuntu, but not in Mageia.

But do not think about that Adobe is abandoning free software: the decision to leave the Linux side will serve to concentrate efforts on Android, Linux-based operating system that goes to grow and with a high degree of adoption.
