Review: Virtua Tennis 4

Here we bring the full review of one of the more traditional games of tennis: Virtua Tennis Sega 4. The game, which is integrated with motion sensors and PS Kinect Move, mixing elements of success with good innovations, check out:

The old cake recipe
4 Virtua Tennis is not only known to be the official tennis simulator of SEGA, but for being a pioneer in many aspects of gaming. The highlight is the link to the game with platforms, since the beginning of the decade, the game received versions of arcade gamers who did a lot of machines exchanging the famous fight and beat-ups, with the main challenges for sports stars of the time .

Years passed, Virtua Tennis has won a formidable rival: Top Spin. As the rivalry between the two grows every year, the work of SEGA becomes ever greater, and the old light question again: What to do? Innovate and reach new audiences, or elements that have worked to improve and maintain the faithful audience?
In the new version of Virtua Tennis, we adopted the second option and you can see various elements of the original game, such as moving, game modes and the famous "beeping" that resemble the racket hits. But the game also features an outstanding innovation, compatibility with the Kinect, something that his rival does not, limiting itself to the PS Move.

Where are the Grand Slams?
If your intention is to literally get in the mood of the grand slams as Roland Garros and Wimbledon, you better prepare yourself for disappointment. While the great sports stars are licensed in the game, Virtua Tennis 4 lacks these competitions ... Not officially.

In Arcade mode, you play matches in countries where the official competitions are held. For example: In France you play matches on clay courts of Roland Garros, and London (England) you play matches on grass courts of Wimbledon. Moreover, the Arcade mode also has a major limitation, because instead of tournaments around the world, you play friendly matches as these countries can finish a race within minutes.

The most complex is with World Tour, which is the Career Mode of the game. You must first create your player, customizing appearance, movements and other basic elements of these modes, then join in the tennis world in search of first place in the world ranking. His journey goes through training and friendly games that develop the attributes of your athlete. In World Tour you can also unlock a few blocks for use in Exhibition mode, which corresponds to friendly matches against the CPU or against up to three friends in offline mode.

In online mode, you can challenge your virtual opponents alone or in couples, looking for a good placement in the rankings online. What's more, the game features the Party mode, where you can play minigames in all of World Tour mode as shown in the table below:

Integration with Kinect
Virtua Tennis 4 has a compatibility mode with PS Kinect and Move, called Motion Play. In the version we tested, Xbox 360, when the sport was played by one person, she behaved so nice and still running at 60 frames per second.

But for two players, we could see a sharp drop frames that resulted in the game running much slower. We also noticed a greater delay in the execution of movements, than the version for just one player.
What pleased enough, he was moving. Even if she is almost entirely automatic, but still we must move forward at the time your opponent makes a "largadinha.

And what was not pleased with was the difficulty of scoring a point, because in this way is much more difficult to score over their opponents than in the traditional way. Each point is awarded after an intensive and long rally.

The old gameplay compromises
Virtua Tennis 4 was known for the ease in which any player, however he is well lay in the genre, could have fun in the game played without encountering impossible to accomplish. At the time, it pleased enough, nowadays not so much.

Games like Top Spin offers a more realistic motion based on stamina and other attributes of the athlete. In Virtua Tennis 4, and we find ourselves with buttons that operate similarly, but actually have different functions, we still have the strength to hit a well-functioning irregularly.

Its positioning influences the strength of batting, since the farther away, more time to make the move. But in many instances, it does not work, causing the ball to be hit too high for the distance stipulated.
And to complete, Virtua Tennis 4 has a kind of "special move" which consists of extremely hard hit after the top bar is filled. That takes away the reality imposed by the game, leaving it more Arcade.

Charts evolved satisfactorily
What really come a long way over the other versions, the graphics were Virtua Tennis. Clearly the whim with the set of reflections and shadows of the players and other members of the court. Still on them, differences in floor are impressive, especially in grass courts, where even the wear was well represented.

The stars of the sport were also very well designed, but we feel that stars such as swimming, Feder and Williams sisters, are more whimsical than other athletes, especially in facial expressions.
For sound, the sound of the famous "plastic racquets continues in Virtua Tennis 4, but nothing that is a downside, however, over time he became a hallmark of the franchise. The only thing that stood out was the sound of the athletes during the game, leaving players feeling dumb.

Conclusion
Virtua Tennis 4 showed improvement over those charts and became the first sports game with compatibility for all motion sensors. However, the gameplay remains somewhat compromised and the absence of the Grand Slans causes some frustration to the fans of the sport.
