Announced nearly one year ago as a free fork of Mandriva Linux, mageia finally reaches version one, unfortunately brought little news if you always try to have the latest versions of programs, but still worth a visit.
Above all, the distro mageia is a community-maintained, organized by a nonprofit organization and governed by a board of people who were elected democratically by the team of contributors.
Project page they maintain a section on the numbers affected by the distro, and despite being a project that began just over nine mess, the numbers are impressive: more than 100 employees separated by more than 10 teams and over 180 donors approximately 11,700 euros, all to create a distro with two different architectures, two options for live distro (with KDE and GNOME) and more than 7380 packages available for download and installation, and available in over 160 languages.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the user) the mageia preferred to keep some older versions of programs in the distribution, such as GNOME, which is still version 2, or LibreOffice, which is also not the latest version. Obviously you can download it later, but still sucks.
Downloading the mageia can be done on the project site, and you can even choose from several options to download, as a live CD with GNOME or KDE, or 32-bit architecture or 64-bit installation. How is a project maintained by developers, it is worth knowing, and even make the team. Even if you do not schedule, can be part of the team that handles the translation of art or design, among other things.
