Atlantis To Carry First Apple iPhone Into Space

In addition to weather the inevitable end of the party, the last mission of space shuttle Atlantis through the cosmos - which was scheduled for liftoff on Thursday if the weather at Cape Canaveral collaborate, which so far does not seem to be the case - will take their Baggage two starters in the world of space travel: a pair of 4 iPhones.

During his journey to where no other phone has ever been, smartphones are loaded with the SpaceLabs app (in fact, it is available on the App Store for $ 1), which will use the various features of the all powerful phones apple as the most economical substitutes expensive equipment tailored for space research.

Once in orbit, the devices will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS its acronym in English) and will have the mission to measure the height and curvature of the earth, and to use their cameras to "see" the contours of the earth's crust and thus locate its position on the globe (just remember that there is no GPS signal in space).

The idea is to enable NASA's future spacecraft are able to locate themselves if lost while navigating in low Earth orbit and return safely home.

The phones have been certified as capable of space travel NanoRacks by the company, a company that provides services to the U.S. government in their approach to the ISS. Yet the devices will be constantly nonitorados by NASA, which will periodically assess how the unit will face the rigors of space travel, especially high-radiation space.
