There is still no official word from Google on the subject. Anyway, the company shipped on Tuesday an upgrade to Chrome with what appears to be a new option for the initial guide. I refer to the Chrome build 12.0.742.91 in Windows 7 for comment on the matter.
Above you see the new tab's initial Chrome. It features the 8 most visited sites in my browser usage, and allows viewing the recently opened pages. If the browser closes unexpectedly (you never know when a blackout will happen), this is the best chance of recovering what you were reading.
The funniest thing is that the initial guide this experimental version of the browser displays the options Foo and Bar Just do not ask me what it means, because both options carry blank pages here on my machine.
about: flags
Perhaps with an eye on touch interfaces, the original experimental guide lets you switch between modes Most Visited, Foo Bar and clicking on any part of the screen and drag the mouse cursor to the desired direction.
What do you think will be the Foo and Bar? I have not found references on this subject in the internets.
To enable the experimental initial guide: type about: flags in the address bar (Omnibar) and enable the New Tab Page "experimental. At your own risk, eh.
